What do Spock, Jadzia Dax, Kathryn Janeway, D’Vana Tendi, and Rok-Tahk have in common? They are all related to science. Oh, and they’re also my daughter’s favorite Star Trek characters.

Several years ago, my wife and I were binge-watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Halfway through the series, my then 2-year-old daughter gushed over Jadzia Dax. She even created an original science officer character as a friend for Dax.

After DS9, I began a rewatch of my favorite Star Trek series: Voyager. Every time we both watch, she remembers Captain Kathryn Janeway. We’ve come to call it Star Trek: “Janeway.”

It excited me when I learned of an upcoming Nickelodeon show called Star Trek: Prodigy. When I learned it would feature Janeway, I was ecstatic! A kids-oriented Star Trek show AND our favorite ST: “Janeway” character? It’s the greatest opportunity to bond and geek over something Star Trek!

Star Trek: Prodigy had both of us hooked from the beginning till the end. Based on previous experiences, I expected my daughter to like Hologram Janeway. Her favorite character became Rok-Tahk, the big-hearted giant with an eagerness for science.

Then came Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and my daughter liked Ethan Peck’s portrayal of Spock. I borrowed a little golden book called “I Am Mr. Spock” from the library, which she had me borrow again a few weeks later. Another science-related character on her list!

I watched Star Trek: Lower Decks to fill the gap between shows. During the intro, my daughter enjoys the giant creature on the Cerritos’ warp nacelle. I recently asked her about her favorite character in this show. You probably guessed it — it’s D’Vana Tendi, a sciences division junior officer.

Through the years, my daughter has shown interest in art and science, and I happily provide her with the necessary tools. It’s an amazing journey I’m proud to be part of.
