How I Got Over My Burnout

You need to take care of yourself!

A long time ago in a country far, far away I got a burnout. I was working as a web designer for a small marketing and business company and as the years progressed I achieved higher rankings and responsibilities. I even ended up working as the only one working in three departments while also helping the other employees. This had led to anxiety, lack of personal care, and inevitably to burnout. If I had known then that the first step in prevention was to just talk to someone about it, things might have turned out better.

My Work

At the time I was working for the company for about five years. I started there as a junior web designer in a team of two — me and my supervisor — as part of a newly added department. There wasn’t much work to do yet, so I often helped out the other departments like direct mail fulfillment and graphic design. I had years of graphic design experience and one of the other employees was even an old classmate from secondary school. All this work was something I studied for, enjoyed, and came easy to me.

Pretty soon some other big changes took place. The company was going to use a new database system for administration and wanted us to micromanage our time to be more efficient, although I’m pretty sure half of us did no such thing at all after a few days. But that was okay. Management understood that we often worked on two or three things at the same time. And when they implemented obligatory meetings in the morning, they soon saw that wasn’t for us. There were six employees at the time and made the company feel like a family who was working towards a similar goal. I felt comfortable and content. I even bought my first apartment a few years later. I hardly took any time off, even if I was given 25 days a year. They sometimes even had to force me to take some time off.

The Burnout

A few years later, the company tried to get into sales and had a warehouse full of merchandise. This was a plan that the boss came up with together with somebody else, but his partner left him at his own devices pretty soon. This led to some employees having…
