I sat down with my wife and daughter to watch the pilot episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds last weekend. As a spin-off series to Star Trek: Discovery, SNW boldly takes us back to a time before Kirk, before the Borg, before stable Gamma Quadrant wormholes, under the command of Star Trek’s first-ever televised Captain Christopher Pike.

The Star Trek franchise was created by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s and began with Star Trek: The Original Series. He initially had trouble kicking off his television series but managed to break through with perseverance and luck.

Although the series got canceled after three seasons, it became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, with fans greeting each other with Vulcan salutes or reciting poems in the Klingon language. It also inspired movies, series, and technological advances within our lifetime.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is joining the family of this inspiring utopian franchise. Set a decade before Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike and his crew explore the galaxy in a contemporary take on the episodic storytelling and designs of Star Trek: The Original Series
