Explore Strange New Worlds With New Star Trek Series
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds picks up where Star Trek: Discovery left us stranded.
I sat down with my wife and daughter to watch the pilot episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds last weekend. As a spin-off series to Star Trek: Discovery, SNW boldly takes us back to a time before Kirk, before the Borg, before stable Gamma Quadrant wormholes, under the command of Star Trek’s first-ever televised Captain Christopher Pike.
The Star Trek franchise was created by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s and began with Star Trek: The Original Series. He initially had trouble kicking off his television series but managed to break through with perseverance and luck.
Although the series got canceled after three seasons, it became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, with fans greeting each other with Vulcan salutes or reciting poems in the Klingon language. It also inspired movies, series, and technological advances within our lifetime.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is joining the family of this inspiring utopian franchise. Set a decade before Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike and his crew explore the galaxy in a contemporary take on the episodic storytelling and designs of Star Trek: The Original Series, evident in the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sees the return of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, who we got to know throughout ST: Discovery's second season. The first episode of Strange New Worlds was a great (re)introduction to Captain Pike. Mount brings his real-life leadership style to the character, giving us a captain who likes to find consensus, keeps an open mind, thinks quickly on his feet, and has good charisma.
Also rejoining the crew is Ethan Peck as science officer Spock. Though Leonard Nimoy’s Spock is tough to live up to, Peck manages to give us the quirkiness of his human side, contrasting his Vulcan blood and upbringing. And he looked great in a beard, and my 4-year-old daughter became his number one fan!
